Hey dreamer! I know that you’ve probably encountered the idea that there is a secret magic key out there that you haven’t been able to find that will lead to your success in the entertainment industry. My friend, there is no such key. This mythical key that you seek promises you fame, glory and fortune say that with luck, talent and connections, you will find the doors you seek overnight. The truth, however, is that you are the key to your own success. Once you recognize that, then you will be on your way to unlocking so many doors that you alone are meant to enter.
The Magical Key Myth
I will be first to admit that the notion of a secret key is alluring. It promises that with just the right combination of luck, talent, or connections, you’ll suddenly find yourself cast in a major role or signing with a top agent. Oh, how this can lead you to feeling frustrated and lost when this key never lands in your lap.
Although this myth won’t lead you to the golden gates of fame, it can lead you to unrealistic expectations and a passive approach to your career. Meaning, you won’t take the steps you need to move forward. Instead, you will sit around waiting, and waiting, and waiting for this secret key that unlocks your magical moment of being discovered – is nowhere to be found.
You Hold the Power
Let’s be real. You know that there is no secret formula, shortcut, magic pill or KEY to your success as an actor. The truth is that it takes a lot of hard work, perseverance, and strategy. You have more control over your path than you might think. The key to your success lies in your ability to harness your own strengths and actively shape your career.
Build and Nurture Your Network
Although it is also true that you cannot rely on the connections you make to pave your way to becoming a paid working actor, one powerful tool at your disposal is the network you build. If you don’t expect anything out of the people you meet over the years in this industry, connections with fellow actors, directors, agents, and other industry professionals can open doors and create opportunities. Ultimately, it isn’t about who you know but how you cultivate and nurture these relationships. Networking isn’t just about exchanging business cards (NO); it’s about creating genuine connections, showing up consistently, and being supportive of others.
Leverage Your Network
So now that you know that no one is holding this secret magical key for you, and YOU are the key that unlocks every door you choose to open, how do you start building meaningful connections and relationships with other like-minded artists?
- Attend Events: This can be hard in smaller towns, but if you have the chance to attend one of the following, go for it! Whether it’s film festivals, theater productions, or industry panels, try to attend events where you can meet people in the industry. Ask questions, strike up conversations and be interested in what they do so you can make new friends!
- Build Genuine Relationships: Remember, it’s all about REAL relationships. Focus on building real relationships rather than just seeking immediate benefits (that’s a turnoff). Offer support, collaborate on projects, and celebrate others’ successes. For meaningful opportunities are more likely to arise from an authentic connection!
- Stay Active on Social Media: This one is a doozy for us creatives, especially if you are a quiet person to start with. But when you use platforms like Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter to connect with industry professionals, you are staying on top of mind for those who do check the platforms. So, don’t be shy to share your work, engage with others’ content, and participate in conversations related to your field.
- Collaborate and Create: It’s all about collaboration! Whether it’s community theater, independent films, music videos, or YouTube videos, creating work with others can attract attention and build your reputation. You can also create your own content – in fact, it’s encouraged!
Embrace the Journey
This journey is a marathon, not a sprint. Which means that there will be many ups and downs and curveballs will always be thrown your way. You might even book a part, work on set, and learn later that you’ve been cut from the scene or recast for no reason other than it didn’t work for the project. That’s ok! Because with each experience (good or bad), you will gain so much more in the long run. Embrace the process and don’t get discouraged when you aren’t where you want to be right away.
You aren’t missing anything, and you are full of talent! The journey is always different for everyone. Just remember that no one is going to hand you this magical key that you think you’re missing. You are the key my friend. It’s time to start unlocking doors with persistence, resilience, and your own unique magic!
