Self-Talk: What You Say Matters!

pexels-photo-4337135-4337135.jpgWhat Did You Just Say?

This is a hard one, and I will be the first to admit that I still fall into the trap of negative self-talk from time to time… And since you are a creative like me, I would bet money that you can be very hard on yourself too. It’s natural to fall into a black-hole of negativity from time to time, but that’s why I cannot stress how importance of self-talk!

When you are recording your auditions and getting ready to submit, what is the first thing you say to yourself before, after and then during your audition? Do you pump yourself up or naturally bring yourself down? Do you even notice what you say?

Because a lot of the time, you might not even realize you are sabotaging yourself from the very start. ESPECIALLY if you are overwhelmed!!! When you add stress into the mix, you are bound to see yourself drifting off into the stinkin-thinkin zone. Know this – YOU ARE NOT ALONE! Like I said from the start, I practice positive self talk daily, but can have my bad days. Usually it happens when I am on tight deadlines, am overwhelmed with a lot of tasks on my to-do list, and am in the midst of creating something or planning something big! It happens and it’s OK. You’re human and I think the important thing is to recognize it so you can take a step back from whatever you are doing in order to regroup your thoughts.

Get Out & Catch Your Breath

Chances are that you are inside most of the time, right? It’s nice to stay at home, and in today’s day and age we are all very fortunate to have the choice to do so. Being able to submit auditions, record voiceover projects and create right in our space is a gift! Sometimes however, staying in this zone of comfort can lead to some toxic effects – such as negative self talk.

So, when you have been working your butt off and you feel like a vampire who is avoiding the sunlight and those voices are starting to chatter in your brain, then it’s safe to say that you need to take some time and get outside!

You are human, and that’s a beautiful thing. But in that, you need to be aware that there will be times where you need to break away to get some fresh air and vitamin D. Yes, your career and dreams are extremely important, but your mental health is what will drive you towards success. With that said, I am not in any way a licensed therapist, but am giving you my insights on the power of self-talk and what works best for me when I get in a funky space. If you feel like you need more help, I always recommend looking into a licensed therapist who you can talk to! You’re worth it!

Remember: You are full of greatness and you have a destiny to fulfill. Talking positive to yourself can be hard at times and takes a lot of practice. You work hard day in and day out. You worry about the unknown. You are hard on yourself and always feel like you need to do more. You are a dreamer who feels like you never do enough…

But here’s the thing: You ARE enough and as long as you do a little more than yesterday and you stay on track towards your dreams, you are doing JUST ENOUGH! You are following your heart, and that is exactly where you need to be. Go out and explore nature. Read a book and relax your mind. Whatever you do, speak nice to yourself. You deserve that!!!
